After a long, wet Ocean Hills winter, pollinators are foraging around looking for food. March nectar is especially important for early emerging bees, as well as some butterflies and pollinator flies and beetles. By planting pesticide-free, blooming flowers and bulbs early you can provide local pollinators with pollen and nectar now when they need it most. All the beauty of spring is dependent on the effectiveness of our pollinators, who we support with our landscape. It was fascinating to hear about how to attract and support pollinators from the OHCC Garden Club March 13th speaker, Sharon Reeves.

Our speaker, Sharon Reeves, has been a San Diego Master Gardener since 1998. She has worked as a consulting Horticulturist for Monrovia Nurseries and as a landscape designer for Brightview Landscaping. In 2015 she graduated with an MS in Biology/Ecology from SDSU. Her design business is called ReWild. Sharon specializes in drought tolerant, native and wildlife gardens.

We hope you joined us for this meeting to learn how to attract more pollinators to your yards. If you have any plants or cuttings you would like to share, there is always a share table at the side entrance before each meeting. We meet in Abravanel Hall. Social time with goodies begins at 9:30 am and the meeting starts at 10 am.

New to our meetings this year is our question box. If you have a gardening question you would like answered, drop it in the box before the meeting. We will pick one to discuss at the meeting and it will also be answered on the OHCC Garden Club Facebook page.

The Garden Club, along with our friends the Save the Monarch Butterfly Club, will be sponsoring a joint event for the OHCC 40th Anniversary on Friday, May 10th, and we hope you will be to join us in our celebration.

Current Garden Club members may join the OHCC Garden Club private Facebook Group to share gardening questions, knowledge and ideas. If you are a current, paid member of the Garden Club and would like to join, send an email to the Garden Club Member Services Liaison Diane Bednarski at dianezbednarski@gmail.com
